Hansa Mehta Library starts orientation programmes at M S University

VADODARA: Before the beginning of the new academic year 2013-14, the Hansa Mehta Library of M S University has started organizing orientation programmes for newly admitted students at Sir Sayajirao Memorial Trust Library.

The orientation programmes at Sir Sayajirao Memorial Trust Library have begun for students enrolled in third year onwards including the masters' programme, PhD students, researchers, faculty members and international students.

The programmes that began on Tuesday will continue for two months between 11 am and 1 pm and between 2.30 pm and 4.30 pm from Monday to Friday.

The programme is intended to familiarize the users and make them aware of the library resources and increase the use of these resources.

A power point presentation will be followed by visit to all sections in the library.

"Our city - Vadodara - is blessed with one of the top 20 university libraries of India - the Hansa Mehta Library which from decades caters the need of information to the faculty, researchers and students of the institution. The library has huge collection of documents, print journals, e-Journals, e-books, online encyclopedia, online thesis and many more open access resources are accessible from the website www.hmlibrary.ac.in," said MSU librarian Dr Mayak Trivedi.

સુપ્રસિધ્ધ હંસા મહેતા લાયબ્રેરીનો આજે ૬૩મો સ્થાપનાદિન

હંસા મહેતા, યુનિવર્સિટીના પ્રથમ વાઇસ ચાન્સેલર હતાં

એમના પતિ જીવરાજ મહેતા ગુજરાતના પ્રથમ મુખ્ય પ્રધાન હતા

વડોદરા,તા.1 - ેએમ.એસ.યુનિવર્સિટીની ખ્યાતનામ લાયબ્રેરી શ્રીમતી હંસા મહેતા લાયબ્રેરીની આવતીકાલે તા.૧મેનાં રોજ ૬૩મી વર્ષગાંઠ છે. લાખો વિદ્યાર્થીઓ માટે પુસ્તકપરબ બની રહેલી આ લાયબ્રેરીની સ્થાપના તા.૧મે, ૧૯૫૦ ના રોજ થઇ હતી. આ વિસાળ જ્ઞાાનભંડાર સાથે જેમનું નામ સાંકળી લેવાયું છે. એ શ્રીમતી હંસા મહેતા એમ.એસ.યુનિવર્સિટીના પ્રથમ વાઇસ ચાન્સેલર હતાં. યુનિવર્સિટીના ગર્લ્સ કેમ્પસમાં આવેલા ચાર રેસિડેન્સ હોલ પૈકી એક હોલ પણ આ વિદૂષીના નામે ઓળખાય છે. એમના પતિ જીવરાજ મહેતા ગુજરાતના પ્રથમ મુખ્ય પ્રધાન હતા.

એમ.એસ.યુનિવર્સિટીનું મૂળ સ્વરૃપ બરોડા કોલેજ તરીકે હતું જે ઇ.સ. ૧૮૮૧ માં શરૃ થિ હતી. બરોડા કોલેજ આર્ટસ કોલેજ હતી. એ જ રીતે સાયન્સ ઇન્સ્ટિટયુટ, કોમર્સ કોલેજ અને સેકંડરી ટીચર્સ ટ્રેનીંગ કોલેજ વગેરે વડોદરામાં એ વખતે ઉચ્ચ શિક્ષણની સુવિધા પૂરી પાડતી હતી. તા.૩૦ એપ્રિલ, ૧૯૪૯ નાં રોજ આ તમામ કોલેજો અને ઇન્સ્ટિટયુટને એખ છત્ર હેઠળ આવરી લેવાઇ, જે કાર્ય એમ.એસ.યુનિવર્સિટીની સ્થાપનામાં પરિણમ્યું.
યુનિવર્સિટીની સ્થાપનાવેળા હુઝુર પોલીટેકલ ઓફિસ અને સેક્રેટરીયટ લાયબ્રેરી નામની બે સ્ટેટ લાયબ્રીના ૨૫,૦૦૦ પુસ્તકો શ્રીમતી હંસા મહેતા લાયબ્રેરીને સુપરત કરાયા હતા.
આજે યુનિવર્સિટીની વિવિધ ફેકટરીઓમાં આવેલી ૧૪ લાયબ્રેરીઓ જ્યારે ડિપાર્ટમેન્ટમાં આવેલી ૨૫ લાયબ્રેરીઓ શ્રીમતી હંસા મહેતા લાયબ્રેરીના વડપણ હેઠળ કાર્યરત છે. આ તમામ વાંચનાલયોમાં એકંદરે સાત લાખથી વધુ પુસ્તકો, ૬૩ કોમ્પ્યુટર અને ૧૭ નોડ ઉપલબ્ધ છે. ૮૦,૦૨૫ ચોરસ ફીટમાં પથરાયેલો એનો રીડીંગ રૃમ ૧૬૦૦ વિદ્યાર્થીઓને એકસાથે બેઠક વ્યવસ્થા પૂરી પાડી રહ્યો છે. લાયબ્રરી રોજના ૧૪ કલાક ખુલ્લી હોય છે.
યુનિવર્સિટી લાયબ્રરી અને યુનિવર્સિટી કેમ્પસના ૫૦૦૦ ઓનલાઈન જર્નલમાંથી ૩૬,૭૧૫ વાર ડાઉનલોડ દ્વારા ઈ-રીસોર્સીસનો મહત્તમ ઉપયોગ કરીને એમ.એસ. યુનિવર્સિટી એ ક્ષેત્રે દેશમાં ૨૬મું સ્થાન ધરાવે છે.
ગઈ તા.૧૯ માર્ચે શ્રીમતી હંસા મહેતા લાયબ્રરીમાં ઓપન નોલેજ ગેટ વેની સુવિધા શરૃ કરાઈ છે. આનાથી યુનિવર્સિટીનાં સંશોધન અને એ પછી પોતાના સંશોધનપત્રોનું પ્રકાશન કરવા માગતા વિદ્યાર્થીઓ અને અધ્યાપકોનું કામ વધુ સુગમ બનશે.
તદુપરાંત, ઈન્સ્ટિટયુશનલ રીપોઝિટરી, બુક લિફ્ટ અને મોબાઈલ રેકની વ્યવસ્થાઓથી પણ લાયબ્રરીને સજ્જ કરાઈ છે. વળી, સતત લાઈટીંગ વ્યવસ્થા માટે અહીં ૧.૫ કેવીએનું જનરેટર ગોઠવવામાં આવ્યું છે.
એમ.એસ. યુનિવર્સિટીના વિદ્યાર્થીઓ માટે શ્રીમતી હંસા મહેતા લાયબ્રરીમાં બેસીને કરાયેલું વાચન જિંદગીભરનો યાદગાર અનુભવ છે.

VADODARA: M S University (MSU), especially its Hansa Mehta library, is among top 25 institutes of the country.

The Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre, an autonomous Inter-University Centre of the University Grants Commission (UGC), has ranked MSU's H M Library 17th in terms of yearly total downloads (YTD).

In terms of document delivery service (DDS), it has been ranked sixth. And in terms of contribution to the 'Shodhganga' project, the university has been ranked at 24th position.

The INFLIBNET Centre has recently brought out a compilation titled 'Measuring research output and its impact using bibliometric indicators: Profiles of top 50 universities of India'. This compilation is aimed at sensitizing academic administrators and policy makers on measuring and evaluating research performance and ranking of academic institutions.

It also provides an opportunity to these 50 universities to examine its performance in different disciplines, identify gaps and figure out ways and means for further improvement.

The download statistics reveal that MSU is the only university from Gujarat to be in the top 20 list with 2,09,825 YTD.

"Last year, we (MSU) were ranked 18 in terms of YTD. Now, our ranking has improved further with an increase of nearly 36,000 YTD," MSU librarian Mayank Trivedi told TOI.

"The statistics provided by INFLIBNET show a strong and positive correlation between number of articles downloaded from e-resources through UGC-Infonet Digital Library consortium by faculty and researchers of MSU and number of research publications," he said.

In terms of DDS, MSU has been ranked sixth. DDS refers to the supply of photocopy from repository against a request from researchers from outside the campus.

"Our library is one of the 20 designated document delivery centres of the country designated byUGC," said Trivedi.

It was last year that MSU and INFLIBNET Centre had entered into collaboration whereby MSU became part of UGC's 'Shodhganga' project which refers to the storage of all Indian Electronic Thesis and Dissertations (ETD) at the centre.

"Although we (MSU) had joined the Shodhganga project in September last, we have been ranked at 24th position out of 130 universities that have joined the project," said Trivedi, adding that the university's position will further improve as more scholars become part of the Shodhganga project.

H M Library to get AC reading room

VADODARA: There is some good news for thousands of students who throng the reading room of Shrimati Hansa Mehta Library at M S University. The university is planning to air-condition (AC) the entire reading room.

"We are hoping to get the entire reading room converted into a centrally air-conditioned room within the next six months. This will help students who utilize the reading room for long hours every day," university librarian Dr Mayank Trivedi told TOI on Tuesday on the sidelines of a function to inaugurate institutional repository (IR), open knowledge gateway, book lift, generator and mobile racks facility at the library.

Students and teachers visiting the Shrimati Hansa Mehta Library of M S University will now be able to get access to all the e-resources free. Also, they will not have to worry about power failures and space crunch in the reading rooms. The university library has added new infrastructure.

The institutional repository (IR), a link of which has been provided on the library's website, will help researchers of the university in collecting, preserving and disseminating their intellectual output in digital form.

"Faculties themselves will be able to upload pre-referred papers, post-referred papers, conference papers, book chapters, reports through IR, which is now also an important component for NAAC accreditation," Trivedi said.

The open knowledge gateway facility on the other hand will provide free access to e-resources, including e-books, e-journals, encyclopedias, newspapers, e-thesis and video lectures, which can be also downloaded and printed.

Using funds granted by University Grants Commission, the library has added physical infrastructure like mobile racks, lift and generator.

"This new mobile racks will not only solve the dust problem but are also easily movable solving the space problem at the library," he said.

H M Library ranked 15th by UGC

VADODARA: The Shrimati Hansa Mehta Library of M S University (MSU) has been ranked 15th from among 180 libraries of the country by the University Grants Commission's Infonet Digital Library Consortium.

H M Library is the only one from Gujarat to get its name listed among the top 20 libraries of the country followed by the library of Sardar Patel University which has been ranked 38 and found its name in top 50 libraries.

"Presently, UGC Infonet provides access to over 8,000 e-journals. Based on the usage done by respective libraries, the consortium has ranked the libraries. This will help the libraries in getting additional grants for their development. Our library has been ranked 15th - for the year 2010 which is higher compared to the year before when our library was ranked 26th," says university librarian Mayank Trivedi.

Started with the aim to provide e-resources covering almost all subject disciplines including arts, humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, chemical sciences, life sciences, computer sciences, mathematics and statistics, the consortium is wholly funded by the UGC and executed by the INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network) Centre.

According to the usage statistics released by the consortium, a total of 1,38,000 articles have been downloaded by researchers and users at the H M Library.

With over eight lakh books, the library that has 18,000 students registered and has a daily transaction of 300 books has also seen an increase in the corporate membership in recent times. During financial year, 2010-11 the library had bagged Rs two crore grant for its development.

Hansa Mehta Library goes beyond books

VADODARA: With its collection of over seven lakh books, Hansa Mehta Library is the heart of academic life at MS University here.

And now, it is becoming increasingly technology-driven and getting a taste of professionalism after many years. Innovations have not been restricted to infrastructure alone.

"We have separate blocks for teachers, undergraduates, and PhD and research scholars. And now, we have connected them with free internet nodes for scholars and teachers," said Kautilya Shukla, the librarian who was appointed last year.

A CD server will allow access to all the 1,000 intranet nodes on the campus and one can opt for secondary references which are available on CDs. "After installing the software for university library (SOUL) cataloguing system, the registration process of members has become simpler. The software also allows university departments to place acquisition orders for latest books. Special labelling of books (call numbers) using cellophane and bar codes have made it easier to find a particular title," Shukla said.

"The MSU library is likely to top the list of university libraries in the country on the number of users. We have about 10,000 visitors every day. The reading hall can accommodate 1,100 students and its capacity will be increased. However, frequent book fairs by leading publishers will acquaint students to the latest titles and also develop a flair for reading.

Under a UGC project, we will subscribe 1,600 online journals which will be in addition to our 594 hard-copy journals," the librarian said. "Space management, mobilisation of funds and judicious use of resources made it possible to update the library which has 7,22,955 books at present. There were too many entry and exit points that allowed unscrupulous students to smuggle out books earlier. Now there is only one exit point," Shukla said.

About future plans for the library, Shukla said, "We get an annual allocation of Rs 1.8 crore that includes acquisition, revenue grant from various faculties and binding. Roping in donors will also help us upgrade our system. Our aim is to create a database for all the five lakh titles that we have."
